Why You Need Whole Food Nutritional Supplements

Since this is our mindset in our office and what I use and recommend. Here are some of the questions and discussions we have in our office.

Q: Why do I need Supplements?
A: Everyone needs adequate nutrition to stay healthy and regain their health. Most people don't get enough nutrition in their regular diet. Supplements make it easy to get the nutrition you need with your busy lifestyle.

Q: I take supplements that I get from GNC or Whole Foods, so I'm already getting what I need.
A: Most supplements that you can buy in stores are not absorbed by the body, because they are not recognized by the body as nutrients. They are not "real" nutrients, but simply chemicals manufactured in a laboratory, that mimic nutrients. Would you want to eat dinner that was made in a laboratory? Our body is designed to run efficiently on nutrients that come directly from nature, in the form of fruits and vegetables, etc. Whole Food supplements offer exactly that. What you are currently buying is probably only giving you minimal benefit at best. In many cases it is a waste of your money and will not help you improve your health significantly.

Q: Why do I have to take so many tablets? I only have to take One of my "One A Day" pills.
A: Standard Process supplements are food, right from the farm, that has been concentrated and compressed into an easily consumable form. It is food. If you ate one grape or one pea or one bean, it would not satisfy or sustain you, nor give you adequate nutrition. Neither will on tablet of concentrated food. In order for you to get as much nutrition as you need it would require a huge tablet, too big to swallow. The most effective way for the body to fully assimilate these whole food nutritional supplements is to take them several times a day, just like the way we eat several meals a day.

Q: My doctor told me I need 1,000 mg of Vitamin C. Why does Standard Process "Cataplex C" only have 17 mg in 3 tablets??
A: Most Vitamin C supplements isolate out only one of the many components in a vitamin. Ascorbic acid is what we normally consider Vitamin C, but this is only a small part of the whole vitamin. Standard Process "Cataplex C" contains the entire complex of chemicals. This allows the natural synergy to take place, giving you the full benefit of the vitamin, with maximum absorption and utilization by the body. This also prevents imbalances and deficiencies of some of the essential elements from occurring. It is far more beneficial to have smaller amounts of the whole Vitamin C complex, than it is to have large amounts of only one small part of it.

Q: These are more expensive then the supplements I buy now. I can't afford them.
A: Standard Process is actually one of the lowest priced "natural" supplements that you can buy. It is also one of the very few whole food supplements available. You are likely to receive many more times the health benefit from Standard Process whole food nutritional supplements then from anything you are currently taking. You may even be throwing your money away with what you are buying now, receiving little or no health benefit from them at all. Like a drug, synthetic supplements can mask symptoms that are indications of significant health problems. Whole food supplements are designed to help maintain and restore the body to a state of optimal health, resolving health problems, rather than masking them. Staying healthy is much less expensive then getting sick. If you want to live a long and healthy life, you can't't afford not to be taking whole food nutritional supplements.

Here is an eye opening pic!! See how your great "ONE A DAY" pills work

So... are your vitamins actually getting absorbed??

10 Things Most People Don't Know About Chiropractic

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Chiropractic

1. Pain is the last symptom of dysfunction.
A patient’s back is often restricted or unstable for months or years before it presents as a problem and they show up in a chiropractor’s office. In addition, the absence of pain is not health. While medication may be needed, if you take a pill and the pain goes away, the dysfunction that caused it still persists. Muscle, ligament and joint injuries often occur as a result of long-term biomechanical dysfunction, sometimes from past injuries, making the area more susceptible to future injury.
2. Athletes use chiropractors to stay well and perform better, not just for the occasional injury.
Athletes choose chiropractors because we are movement specialists. Chiropractors were spotted all over the Olympic coverage last year, and top athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all been proud patients of chiropractors. These days it’s far more common than not for major athletes and sports teams to keep chiropractors nearby to help prevent injuries, speed injury recovery, improve balance and coordination, and give them a greater competitive edge.
3. The body does not perform as a cluster of separate mechanisms, but rather a cascade of events that all starts with proper control by the nervous system.
The nerves that travel through and control every function of your body originate at the spinal cord and their transmission may be disrupted if the joints of the surrounding spinal column are not moving properly. This disruption in biomechanical integrity combined with altered physiological function is what chiropractors call a subluxation. Below is a chart that illustrates the relationship of the spinal nerves exiting the vertebra branching off to the various organ systems. You can see why it is not uncommon for a chiropractor to treat a patient with mid-back pain who also suffers from irritable bowel system, a patient with a subluxated sacrum who has been unsuccessfully trying to become pregnant, or a patient with an upper back fixation and acid reflux.

4. Doctors don’t do the healing.
Sorry to disappoint you, but a chiropractor will never fix your back. What we are able to do is restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do. As chiropractors, we believe that the body is a perfect organism in its natural state, and all disease comes from a disruption in the body’s proper transmission of signals by the nerves which affects its ability to heal and to defend against disease-causing agents. We never treat disease. We assess to find which spinal levels are causing the dysfunction  and we adjust it to restore proper nerve flow so the nervous system may work as efficiently and effectively as possible.
5. Chiropractic is for all ages.
Many seniors are not aware of the benefits of chiropractic care which can help them not only with pain relief, but also increase range of motion, balance and coordination, and decrease joint degeneration. There’s no patient too young for chiropractic either! Chiropractors check infants moments after birth for misalignments of the upper vertebrae that may occur as a result of the birth process. In addition to supporting overall health and well-being, parents also take their children to chiropractors to encourage healthy brain and nervous system development, to assist with colic, asthma, allergies, bed-wetting and sleeping problems, and to assist with behavioral disorders.
6. We know about more than your backbone!
This surprises many people who had no idea that chiropractors give advice on nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle, screen for conditions unrelated to the musculoskeletal system and refer out to other practitioners when necessary. Chiropractors are also able to complete specialties in other areas such as pediatrics, sports rehabilitation, neurology, clinical nutrition, and addictions and compulsive disorders.
Other than particular specialties and the differences in learning to adjust and learning to prescribe medication, our training hours are not dissimilar from that of medical doctor. The following are the classroom hours for basic science requirements compiled and averaged following a review of curricula of 18 chiropractic schools and 22 medical schools.

7. Successful chiropractic patients accept responsibility.
When somebody says that they tried chiropractic and it didn’t help, I cringe and get the feeling that they really missed the boat. Of course, there are cases with complicating factors, but I have heard this from people with straightforward chiropractic problems when it is very clear what has happened here. In most cases, one doesn’t acquire back pain over night, and it’s not going to go away over night. If a weak core from years of sitting at your desk is to blame for the additional stress on your joints, I would expect an adjustment to provide relief, but once the condition is no longer exacerbated, I would most definitely prescribe some exercises for you to do at home. I might also suggest we evaluate your nutrition if I suspect an inflammatory diet may be wiring you for pain. Sure, I’m always happy to adjust someone and make a living, but if you’ve been given homework and you don’t do it, I better not hear you blame chiropractic when you’re hurting again!
8. Chiropractic may help you get sick less.
Studies have indicated that adjustments consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain, and may also enhance the production of immunoregulatory complexes important for healthy immune system defense. As far back as the deadly flu pandemic of 1917-1918, chiropractors noticed that their patients seemed to have fewer fatalities than among the general population and were able to publish their work in an osteopathic journal since no scholarly journals were accepting chiropractic data. The estimated death rate among patients of conventional medical care in the U.S. was estimated at 5 to 6 percent while the fatality rate among influenza cases receiving spinal adjustments was estimated at 0.25%.
9. “I heard I’ll have to go forever” is a myth.
You may want to go to your chiropractor forever once you’ve started because you didn’t realize how great getting adjusted is, but your doctor won’t expect you to come for continuous care without symptoms. Generally, if you come in with pain, once you’ve been treated for your initial complaint, you’ll be scheduled for a few more appointments to make sure proper motion is being maintained, then it will be recommended you return occasionally to be checked just like you would go to the dentist to get checked for tartar buildup and cavities. Of course, many people still choose to see their chiropractor weekly or monthly for wellness or maintenance care.
10. Adjustments don’t hurt.
There is no bone snapping or warrior-style pulling heads off spinal columns! The neck adjustment some chiropractors use causes anticipation for many new patients, but is actually much more gentle than they imagined, and involves a quick, direct thrust to a specific spinal bone. The sound an adjustment makes is called a cavitation and is only space being created within the joint causing gasses to be released from the joint capsule, which creates the popping or cracking noise. Also, chiropractic adjustments will not wear out your joints, as some imagine because they have been warned not to “crack their knuckles” for this reason in the past. Adjustments, unlike “knuckle cracking” or having your friend stomp on you while you lay on the carpet, are applied specifically to improve the motion of your joints and limit the small dysfunctions that over time can lead to arthritis. Most people after an adjustment describe the feeling as being “lighter”, having greater ease in moving the body, and being able to stand up taller.

Wondering Which Pillow To Use?

My Personal Experience

This is the Ultimate Cervical Pillow!!!
This pillow changed my life. I had an old neck injury that was a result from playing football in high school that was improving with chiropractic care but every morning my neck was sore and stiff. I tried water pillows, generic curved pillow, small pillows, you name it! It wasn't until my lovely wife came home with one of these and said try it. She got tired of me complaining in the morning. I immediately fell in love with you. It was a little ackward at first because it is longer than an average pillow and defiantly shaped different. But MAN, when you use it it fits like a glove. And there was a time when my wife hurt her neck and she used it. I had to fight her tooth and nail to give it back! So of course we had to get another. And we take these things everywhere when we travel.

The pillow is designed to let you sleep comfortably on your back or side, in the correct spinal alignment.
I would highly recommend this for anyone and everyone. If you want to order one or have any questions  please let us know. You can email at omegachirocenter@gmail.com or call at 919-462-0016.

And get 10% off of your purchase of this pillow if you print this off and present it at our office!!!

Could Texting be the cause of your Neck Issues?

While texting, do you feel a knot in your back or a throbbing in your upper arms? The problem could lie in your thumbs. Because they're the strongest digits on your hands, your thumbs are anchored by two major strands of fascia. This tissue extends all the way up your arm and around your pectoral minor muscle to your rib cage -- meaning you have a formidable force pulling against your chest every time your thumbs are at work. If you always hunch over and allow that fascia to shrink and tighten, you're pitting your thumbs against your chest in a short-rope tug of war. So when you text keep your shoulders pulled back and use two simple stretches a couple of times a day to help undo any damage.

Stretches for the "Smartphone Syndrome"
Stretch 1 Kneel a few inches from a corner of a wall with your body in straight line from head to knees. Put your hands about shoulder width apart and lean forward. When you feel the strain, hold for a 10 count, and then slide your hands back down again. Repeat again once more.

Stretch 2 Stand tall, with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Link your fingers behind your lower back so that your palms face up. Then, keeping the natural arch in your lower back, stretch your arms down toward your legs by pressing your shoulders toward the floor and squeezing your shoulder blades together. Repeat again once more.

If this is a problem for you please let me know and we can address it with certain myofascial adjustments and therapy. Call 919-462-0016 to make an appointment.

POP QUIZ: What's the best way to break through a weight loss plateau?

I bet you didn't think of this one...

A CLEANSE.

Think about it. When you're on a cleanse, you're taking out all the junk from your diet. You're eating only healthy nutrient-rich food, and you're reducing the amount you're consuming overall.

When your body doesn't have to deal with the junk, or work on digesting more food than it really needs, it can get down to the business of efficiently metabolizing. In other words, it begins to work like a clean engine that's been filled with fresh oil.

Not only that, but when you cleanse you're also reducing the stress load on your body. And that means lower stress hormones, which is a MUST if you want to lose fat.

A cleanse is the foundation of a weight loss plateau-busting program.
I LOVE the Standard Process 21 day Cleanse. WHY? because it teaches you how to eat properly and makes you have good habits.
And it is not just for weight loss. I have had many patients with headaches, digestive issues (constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel, acid reflux, etc), sleep disturbances, and chronic pain benefit drastically from cleaning up their diet which improves their overall function.
Because what you put into your body is what your body has to run on, or for a lot of my patients- heal up on.
If you are interested in the 21 day program Please email me back or call the office (919-654-6889) and let me know. We have new classes starting up every few weeks.

I also if you refer 3 people to our program you get $40 off your program. So talk to you friends and family so you can have support and help change lives.

Water????

We are all bombarded with messages about the safety and purity of the water we drink. Do we drink purified water? Spring water? Water from the tap? Just what type of water is most healthy to drink?
The bottom line is that we need water. Our bodies are at least 60% water. According to Elson Haas, M.D., in his book, Staying Healthy with Nutrition, "It is the primary component of all the bodily fluids: blood, lymph, digestive juices, urine, tears and sweat. Water is involved in almost every bodily function: circulation, digestion, absorption, and elimination of wastes, to name a few. Water carries the electrolytes and mineral salts that help convey electrical currents in the body..Water requirements vary greatly from person to person. The climate in which we live, our activity level and our diet all influence our need for water."
Water isn't just liquid to drink. Water provides us with minerals and trace minerals that are absolutely necessary for life. So, when we are choosing which water to drink, we need to think about how we are going to get the water with the most natural balance of minerals. We also need to consider whether our water has been contaminated with unwanted organisms or if the water has been treated with chemicals that could compromise the balance of minerals.
Most tap water in the U.S. today is treated with chemicals, such as chlorine, phosphates, and other chemicals, to clear our unwanted organisms to make it safe for human consumption. The only problem is that air pollutants and other contaminants may not be filtered out of the water.
There are so many things that can contaminate our water supply: fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste products, and now even pharmaceutical medications. In March 2008, the Washington Post reported on a study done on the water supply in Arlington, Virginia by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Department of Agriculture that found small concentrations of pharmaceutical medicaitons- anti-seizure medications, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs- in the water. The article goes on to state that in another research study "pharmaceuticals, along with trace amounts of caffeine, were found in the drinking water supplies of 24 to 28 U.S. metropolitan areas tested. "This was the first federal research on contaminants in water supplies throughout the U.S. and what an eye opener for the scientists. Is it any wonder that we need to be concerned about what type of water we choose to drink?
Types of Water:
Tap Water: Most tap water is contaminated with a host of pollutants that increase your risk of serious health problems.
  •  Arsenic: poisonous element that is a powerful carcinogenic, which has been linked to an increased risk of development of several types of cancer. (Check out the USGA website to see maps that show where and to what extent arsenic occurs in ground water across the U.S. Click here for map )
  • Aluminum: has been linked to the following health concerns:
  1. Alzheimer's Disease
  2. Hyperactivity
  3. Learning disabilities in children
  4. Gastrointestinal disease
  5. Skin problems
  6. Parkinson's Disease
  7. Liver disease
  • Fluoride: this has been thought to prevent cavities and helps build strong teeth, but you and many others have been fooled. As this recent study done on children in India shows, fluoride is anything but a cavity fighter. Fluoride is a well know toxin that actually leads to an increased risk of cavities and can cause a wide range of health problems, including weakening your immune system and accelerating aging due to cellular damage.

Bottled Water40% of bottled water is bottled TAP WATER, which may or may not have received additional filtration. There was a recent study done by the Environmental Working Group that found arsenic and disinfection byproducts (a very powerful carcinogen) as well as 36 other harmful pollutants were hidden in bottled water.
Drinking from a plastic bottle is not a great idea either. Plastic bottles contain a chemical called Bisphenol A or BPA, which is a synthetic hormone disruptor that has been linked to serious health problems such as:
  • Learning and behavioral problems
  • Altered immune system function
  • Prostate and breast cancer
  • Risk of obesity
  • Early puberty in both genders
*** recommend a stainless steel water bottle (make sure it is stainless steel inside as well), a glass water bottle or if you are hung up on the plastic water bottles look for it to say BPA free****
Distilled Water - Use with Caution: the real problem with distilled water is that it is boiled and evaporated away from its dissolved minerals. The water then becomes acidic and seeks to balance itself by drawing minerals right out of your body.It will also draw out contaminants from the container it's stored in for this same reason.
I only recommend using distilled water for a short period of time and only for the purpose of detoxification, as this water can help pull toxins from your body. Drinking it long-term, however, will most likely invite health problems.

Alkaline Water: some people experience an initial "high" when they start drinking alkaline water. This can easily be attributed to detoxification, and the fact that they are likely just becoming better hydrated. Detoxification is about the only benefit of alkaline water, and this benefit is limited to very short term use (no more than a week or two). An additional concern is that many individuals have stomach dysfunctions like GERD or ulcers that are largely related to having too little stomach acid. Long term use of alkaline or ionized water can interfere with your body's natural digestive process by reducing the acid needed to properly break down and absorb food. This could then lead to an upset of your body's good bacteria, which can then open the door to parasitic infection, ulcers, and malabsorption.

"Vitamin" Waternothing more than a clever marketing scheme designed to promote a product that is just as unhealthy as soda! Vitamin waters contain dangerous high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, additives, preservatives and caffeine. Whats' even worse is these manufacturers use distilled water to make their products, which as you've read above is one of the worst types of water you can put into your body!

Filtered Tap Water: this is one of the best choices you and your family can make. There are three different types of water filters... weigh your pros and cons of each.
  • Reverse Osmosis Filter: removes chlorine, inorganic and organic contaminants and 80% of fluoride and most DPBs. The major draw back is the expense of installing and RO filter as most need a plumber to get it up and running.
  • Ion Exchange Filter: removes dissolved salts in the water, such as calcium and softens the water. This system was originally used in boilers and other industrial situations before becoming popular in home purifying units, which usually combine the system with carbon for greater effectiveness.
  • Granular Carbon and Carbon Block Filters: the most common types of counter top and under counter water filters. This filter is recognized by the EPA as the best available technology for the removal or organic chemicals like herbicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals. The downfall is that the loose material inside can channel-- the water creates pathways through the carbon material, escaping filtering.
****The Pure & Clean line of filters are a great choice for this kind of filtration****
Living Water: the ideal pH of your water should be between 6.5 and 7.5, which is neutral. Mountain spring water is in this ideal range. It is some of the healthiest water on the planet because it is "living water". There is a great website called www.findaspring.com where you can find a natural spring in your area.
The best part is that most of these spring water sources are free!!!
***There is one called Mt. Vernon Springs in Siler City****
